Electric vs. propane forklifts: how to compare
Compare electric and propane forklift requirements for the workplace, charging or refuelling, duty cycle and total ownership cost.
Read the guideCompare LPG trucks for material handling where fuel logistics, ventilation and the operating surface have been assessed.
Propane forklifts use an internal combustion engine and an LPG fuel supply. A buying brief should address both the handling task and the facility’s ability to manage fuel, exhaust and cylinder changes. Indoor suitability needs a workplace assessment; opening a door is not a ventilation plan.
Counterbalance trucks with cushion tyres and those with pneumatic-style tyres are built for different conditions. Describe the indoor floor, paved yard, ramps and transitions. Do not choose an outdoor machine by fuel alone: ground clearance, tyres and the manufacturer’s intended use matter.
Before specifying propane for indoor operations, have the workplace’s ventilation and exposure controls assessed by a competent person. Include fuel storage, cylinder handling, maintenance and staff training in the operating plan. A truck that works outdoors may not be appropriate inside a confined or poorly ventilated space.
Request information about service intervals, fuel system condition on used trucks, parts availability and local maintenance arrangements. Compare the full ownership cost with an electric alternative over the same workload and shift pattern.

Only where the machine and workplace conditions are suitable and the required ventilation and exposure controls are in place. Obtain a competent workplace assessment before selecting an internal combustion truck for indoor work.
No. Compare the quoted machine, fuel or electricity, battery or fuel infrastructure, maintenance and utilisation over the same period. A lower initial price does not establish a lower total cost.
