Tow motor vs. forklift: what does the name mean?

Understand tow motor, Towmotor forklifts and tow tractors. Describe the lifting or towing job clearly before requesting equipment or parts.

The practical answer

“Tow motor” can be an informal name for a forklift, a reference to the Towmotor brand, or an imprecise way of describing a tow tractor. Confirm the actual machine and task. A forklift lifts and carries a load on forks; a tow tractor pulls wheeled loads. Their capacity ratings describe different work.

A familiar name can describe different things

Towmotor is an established equipment brand, not simply another spelling of tow tractor. The brand’s history describes early industrial tractors and the later popularity of its forklifts; Logisnext also identifies Towmotor among its heritage brands. That history helps explain the vocabulary, but a familiar workplace nickname does not establish the manufacturer, power source or configuration of a particular truck. Read the machine’s identification information before ordering parts.

When the job needs a forklift

If the task involves raising pallets onto racking, lifting a load for placement or handling it on forks, describe the lifting requirement explicitly. A counterbalance forklift has a mast, carriage and forks, with the truck’s design providing balance for the rated load. Your brief should state the complete load weight, dimensions, highest placement and working space. “Tow motor for sale” alone does not tell a supplier whether the mast will clear a doorway or suit the storage task.

When the job needs a tow tractor or tugger

A tow tractor moves loads on compatible wheeled carts or trailers. It can suit repeated horizontal movements between work areas where the tractor itself does not need to lift the goods. Describe the carts, coupling arrangement, total train weight, route, gradients, floor condition, stopping requirements and operating pattern. Ask the supplier to assess the complete tractor-and-cart combination; the towing vehicle alone does not define whether the system suits the route.

Keep lifting and towing ratings separate

A forklift lifting rating applies to a specified load centre, height and configuration. A tow tractor specification describes towing performance under stated conditions; for example, manufacturer tables may qualify a capacity for level surfaces and list drawbar pull separately. Matching numbers in kilograms or pounds do not make the machines interchangeable. A forklift’s lifting capacity is not permission to tow that weight, and an improvised coupling is not a substitute for an approved arrangement.

Write the quote request around the task

For lifting, start with “We need to place these pallet loads at this height” and attach the load and layout details. For towing, start with “We need to move these wheeled carts along this route” and identify the carts and couplings. Include your city, shift pattern, preferred new or used condition and timing. If the work involves both tasks, ask how the handling process should be divided before choosing a single machine.

Confirm the equipment used for training

A job title or course advertised as “tow motor training” does not identify every machine it covers. Ask which truck type and configuration are included, and have the employer confirm the operator’s preparation for the actual equipment and workplace. CCOHS directs users to the relevant jurisdiction for operator requirements. Do not assume that a familiar name makes training for a different machine transferable without review.

A few good questions.

Need to talk through your application? Send us your equipment brief.

Is a tow motor always the same as a forklift?

No. The wording can be informal or brand-specific, and someone may actually mean a towing machine. Ask whether the equipment lifts loads on forks or pulls carts, then confirm its make and model.

Can I compare a forklift lifting rating with a tugger towing rating?

They measure different duties. Have the supplier confirm the applicable lifting or towing specification for the complete equipment, load and operating conditions.

Does “tow motor” mean propane-powered equipment?

The nickname does not reliably identify the power source. Request the actual truck specification, including its battery or fuel system and workplace suitability.
